Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

When I was around 13 or so ('72) we used to help out on a friends farm.
The baler was an old rickety tow behind thing that broke down all the time.
To pick them up we would drive an old Bedford truck with an wheel driven elevator attached to the side. We
would line up with the bale and capture it in the fork at ground level. It would ride up the elevator to about chest height of someone standing on the back of the truck. You would have to grab it by the strings and pull it away from the tiny landing shelf at the top of the elevator and stack it on the truck tray. Hard work for a kid.
To feed sheep we would have that same truck idling across the paddock in first or second gear and you would cut the strings and throw a bale off the back every 10 yards or so. My little brother (10yo.) managed to get caught in the bale and went off the back of the truck head first into the dirt. lol.
Question; Do you have to worry about shed fires with the wet bales?

When I was 10yo my ass was on the hay wagon stacking bales behind a IH 46 Demonstrator with a acid powder box on it which was good for burning your eyes on windy days. The tractor driving work was reserved for the old retired farmers who earned the right to sit on their ass all day driving around the fields.
I remember when the western haymakers use to bale hay at night to prevent the hay from crumbling in the baler.
When the water wars really get started out West, this type of farming in the desert will be a thing of the past. Guess the Saudis and Chinese will have to grow the alfalfa hay that they export out of the country for their dairy farmers somewhere else.

Was odd to hear they can plant alfalfa back so soon, here in Illinois was told we need to wait a year maybe 2 due to it creates a toxicity in the soil. Was told if it's a year old it causes it, we've lost 2 plantings now over winter but was told if left it would kill itself

Taking my shift on the swather with my dad and brother, as we would run it around the clock until the all the hay was cut. Then, when the hay was ready, my uncle would wake me early to join him, another uncle and my grandpa to bale while the dew was on. Really great memories. Thanks for sharing this video.
